Basics of Bike Sunglasses

What to Look For in a Pair of Bike Sunglasses

There are certain key features to look for in a pair of bike sunglasses.

Polycarbonate lenses

Polycarbonate lenses are 10 times more impact resistant than regular lenses. If you are in a bike accident or hit in the face with some debris while riding, you do not want your lenses to break or shatter. Polycarbonate lenses are also significantly lighter than regular lenses. This increases comfort when worn for bike riding for long periods of time. me.

Ultraviolet (UV) Protection

The UV Index was developed by the National Weather Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The UV Index predicts UV intensity levels on a scale of 1 to 11+, where 1 indicates a low risk of overexposure and 11+ signifies an extreme risk of sunburn and damage. Calculated on a next-day basis for every ZIP Code across the United States, the UV Index takes into account clouds and other local conditions that affect the amount of UV radiation reaching the ground in different parts of the country. Although most people associate over-exposure to the sun and its UV rays with sunburned skin, UV rays can also cause cataracts, damage the retina and cause other eye damage. In order to protect eyes from damage associated with UV rays, most leading pairs of sunglasses provide a level of UV protection. Eye damage from UV rays is irreversible. In the case of many pairs of glasses, a UV coating is used to reduce the transmission of UV light through the lenses. Some materials, such as Trivex and Polycarbonate naturally block most UV light and do not benefit from the application of a UV coating. It is generally recommended by professionals that should find a pair of sunglasses that blocks 99% or 100% of the UV rays.

Wraparound

Wraparound sunglasses are beneficial for bikers because they prevent the sun's harmful UV rays from reaching the eyes from the sides. Hence, where possible, a good pair of bike sunglasses should provide some level of wraparound protection.

Polarized

Polarized sunglass lenses reduce or block sunlight that reflects off surfaces like pavement or water. Even then they may cost more, given that bikers spend a lot of time riding on payment, Polarized lenses can be beneficial.

Removable or Replacement Lenses

Many pairs of high end sports sunglasses permit quick removal and replacement of sunglass lenses. Oakley is noted as offering this feature on most of their sunglasses.  Bike sunglasses are particularly useful in protecting a cyclists eyes from debri and bugs (including bees and hornets).  Hence, even on a cloudy day, a cycling will want to wear sunglasses with clear lenses.  You can either buy two pairs of sunglasses (clear and tinted) or buy a pair with replaceable lenses.
